Hello and welcome to Bob's Lighting Tips brought to you by Butler Lighting.
Today, we're going to discuss five lighting terms.
Lumens
First of all, we're going to talk about lumens. So lumens are the total quantity of light emitted from a light source.
Foot Candles
That's a little different from foot candles, which is the amount of light that's falling on a surface.
Color Rendering Index (CRI)
Next, we're going to be talking about something regarding color. And the first term in the color realm is CRI. That stands for color rendering index. So there's an index of from zero to 100. And 100 is a perfect rendition of how the colors look under a particular light source. So if your lighting has a 20 or 30 CRI, there's a lot of distortion because it's a long way from the 100 maximum which would be in perfect alignment. However, if you have a 90, then it's very good.
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)
Now that is different from the CCT that is correlated color temperature. So the temperature of the light is how warm or how cool is the light source when you look at that source. So a warm source like incandescent is rated at 2,700 Kelvin and a daylight light that's much bluer would be around 5,000 Kelvin. In our homes, we typically will use 2,700. Sometimes we'll use 3,000 Kelvin, which is similar to the old halogen lamp.
Watts
And so then the last term we want to cover is watts. Watts is what we use to measure the amount of energy that we use and we pay to the power company. That's a lot less watts that we use with LED lighting today versus the old incandescent or halogen sources.
So that wraps us up. Come back and visit again for more of Bob's lighting tips.
